I am thinking about pearls

Prized gems, pieces of rareness and beauty and mystery. The famous Abernathy Pearl, from an odd-shaped mussel. The Big Pink Pearl, from an abalone. The Orphan Pearl, found alone. The Hope Pearl.

Pearls are formed as a natural response to organic stimuli–a tiny core is covered with layer upon layer of mother-of-pearl. Pearls can be creamy or pinkish or tinted with yellow, green, blue, brown, purple or black. They are valued because of their rarity; in a haul of three tons, only three or four oysters will produce pearls.

My children are my treasure—and Avery is my pearl.
