When a haircut isn’t just a haircut

For most of my life I’ve had long hair, except for a relatively brief time after the birth of my first son Carter. Then, I felt compelled to cut it short, for reasons that didn’t become clear right away. And lately, I’ve been thinking about cutting my hair short again, which is what I write about this week in “A Little More” at ParentDish.

  1. This was beautiful! Thanks.

But I’m on the shoulder with Niksmom. I had very long hair (down to my knees at one point). I cut it when my neice was sick and losing her hair, as a show of support.

But I loved my short hair! I stopped having headaches. It dries in 15 minutes, rather than 6 hours. And I can just put a little gel in it, run my fingers through it and go. I can go swimming without the commitment of taking care of my hair afterward. And I can still get different looks.

I look better too. I’m going gray in front, and with it short, it looks frosted and chic. Long, it just looked gray.

Maybe when I’m silver, I’ll grow it out again. Maybe. Or maybe not.

(Oh, btw, I linked over from Queen Serene)

  2. i love long hair no matter how old the person….. i say keep it but maybe get a new longer “style’ if you want something different!!!

  3. Ah, I get to be the devil on your other shoulder, eh? I finally cut off all my long hair when Nik came home from the hospital. In fact, this year I have such short hair that I can dry it in 5 minutes…and I love it! I am not one to philosophize over the meaning of my hair. That said, if you aren’t certain…don’t do it! It’s just hair and it will grow back but it takes so darned long! Wait until you are sure.

  4. If I can just say one thing it would be…..

    DON’T DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am still going through post traumatic stress with my short hair! I still wonder, “why, why, why?” I really think that longer hair, cut right, takes years off of a woman! Not that should be the objective, it’s just definitely one of mine~! (LOL) I can just now begin to feel my hair touch the back of my neck for the first time in 2 months and let me tell you, it FEELS GOOOOOOOOOD! So why not just get a really good hair cut that gives you some layers or frames your face better or something of the sort that I would have done had I known how much I would get sick of short hair!

It takes soooooo long to grow it long again, I would advice wearing it up in a pony tail for a while first! 🙂

Just my 2 cents, don’t let the summer heat persuade you!

  5. Great article! But what is up with that woman that implied you are too old to wear long hair???? Good heavens, how ridiculous!

I’m definitely of a certain age and I am hanging on to this mane for awhile yet. But then I am a Leo.

  6. HI Jennifer, I just wanted you to know I gave you an award today! You have probably already received it a dozen times, but hey, you can never have too many awards, and you definitely deserve it!

    Best to you, Noelle
