A long time ago,

even before Tom and I were married, he copied a Raymond Carver poem for me and put it in a wooden frame. Now, it hangs above the kitchen sink, where I can see it everyday. It goes like this:

for Tess

Suppose I say summer.
write the word “hummingbird.”
put it in an envelope.
take it down the hill
to the box. When you open
my letter you will recall
those days and how much,
just how much, I love you.

(A New Path to the Waterfall: Poems, by Raymond Carver, Altantic Monthly Press, 1989).
