Bioethics strikes again

Last week, there was a story in the news about a UNC college professor and his unhelpful opinion (in my opinion) about Down syndrome and pregnancy.  I’m only just now writing about it, but Patricia Bauer has been running excellent coverage of it, and Emily Elizabeth has written a post at Lovely and Amazing  that actually made me laugh about the story.  And along with the laughter, she raises several good points, all of them worth considering.

  1. I just don’t get it. I really don’t understand how sweeping and misinformed opinions/statements/provocations are justified in today’s society. Especially, in the classrooms of our young people soon-to-be heading out into our world, shaping it for our children. Fortunately, there is outcry, and the professor’s ignorance is revealed to the world to see.

  2. I especially liked Lovely and Amazing’s comment about how exactly is that a learning experience. Nice come back definitely. I’m glad people are following it, his attitude is really appalling.

  3. I earned a PhD in Religious Studies from UNC and wrote to the chancellor this week. I, too, received a form letter back.

I plan to send a form letter to Alumni relations next time they ask me for money!
